How Halloween Came to Be
For many people, the word Halloween brings to mind a vision of elementary-aged children visiting door-to-door as they trick-or-treat in a quaint neighborhood, the taste of chocolate and assorted candies, tall witch’s hats jack-o-lanterns, and black cats. The origins of Halloween come from a place of celebration of the changing of the seasons, known in ancient Ireland as Samhain (pronounced “saw-wen”). The Catholic Church began a holiday called All Saint’s Day that takes place on November 2nd. It was created as a day to honor the dead, although it is believed that All Saint’s Day was developed as a way to replace the Celtic holiday of Samhain. October 31st became known as All Hallows Eve and eventually became what we know today as Halloween.
Here are some fun facts for those interested in the traditions and origins of Halloween.
· Trick-or-treating had a different purpose in ancient times than it does today. It began as a way for poor and needy people to strike a bargain with the wealthy; an offer to pray for the wealthy's dead relatives’ souls, in exchange for some food, money, and/or wine. This practice was known as souling.
· It was originally believed by the Celtic pagans that Samhain is a time of year when the spirits of the dead are closer to humankind and more easily communicated with. They believed that this also made it easier to predict the future and would build huge bonfires to burn sacrifices of animals to Celtic gods.
· It wasn’t until colonial times in America that Halloween became a sort of celebration of harvest. It began with play parties and the telling of ghost stories, as well as other fun and merriments.
· After the Irish Potato Famine of 1846, immigrants and Americans alike drew from the ancient traditions of going door-to-door to receive wine, money, and food.
· It wasn’t until the 1920s and 30s that the holiday of Halloween finally became a more commercial and publicized affair. The 1950s ushered in approaching children as the main focus of Halloween celebration, after vandalism became so drastic during Halloween each year that drastic measures had to be taken by the law to stop it.
· The black cat superstition began in the middle ages, when many people believed that witches would transform themselves into black cats to avoid getting caught.
· The original jack-o-lanterns were actually potatoes and turnips. The jack-o-lantern originated from a story called “Stingy Jack,” in which a man named Jack attempts to trick the Devil and is forced to carry around a jack-o-lantern as he roams the earth for eternity. It wasn’t until Halloween in America that pumpkins were discovered to make the perfect version of a jack-o-lantern.
· In the U.S. each year, over 6 billion dollars is spent annually on Halloween, making it the second-highest grossing holiday after Christmas.
· Dressing in costumes and/or “mumming,” when folk acts put on plays, is also associated with the ancient traditions of Christmas.
· In 2005, Prince Harry Windsor of Great Britain, wore a Nazi soldier costume to a Halloween party. After much uproar and offense taken by the Jewish community and others, Harry issued a public apology stating that he made a “poor choice of costume.”
· In China, Halloween is called Teng Chieh and is a remembrance of the dead. Food and drink is placed in front of photographs of deceased family members.
